Joe Bowers

My name is Joe Bowers.  I was born in Hardin, Montana in 1948.  I have been doing woodwork almost all my life except for 2-3 years of ranch work.  When I was about 7, my father built me a lathe out of wood.  He used an old Mix Master for the motor and the tools were made out of files.  I’ve been hooked ever since.

After high school, I enlisted in the Army for 3 years as a helicopter mechanic, then hired on with a building contractor after returning from Vietnam.  After moving to the Flathead, I started building horse-drawn carriages for the Montana Carriage Company.  This turned into a 19-year-long adventure and led to my building a carriage for Michael Jackson and a doctor’s buggy for Jane Fonda and Ted Turner.  It also eventually led to a job at Flathead Lake Lodge, where some of my carriages can still be seen.  When that era sadly ended, I went to work at Kalispell Regional Medical Center building cabinets and countertops with their woodshop.  Since retiring in 2010, I have joined the Glacier Woodturners Association and enjoy wood turning as a hobby.
