Therese Ely
From childhood I have always painted; one special experience stands out. On a family vacation to Grand Teton National Park my mother gave me a sketchbook and oil pastels. She and I took a morning walk to Jenny Lake. While she quietly said her morning prayers I painted Mt. Moran and Skillet Glacier across the water in that early light. Not realizing it then, I was enchanted with plein aire painting.
My college education was a mix of biology, chemistry, and art classes. Beyond work, backpacking has been part of my recreation; my husband Gary and I have shared that experience for over 35 years. As he casts for trout, I pull out a small watercolor kit or pochade box and oils.  Plein aire workshops at Yosemite as well as with noted western artists have helped me develop my craft.
Many of my outdoor pieces are reference only; my favorites are minimally finished in the studio before framing. My larger paintings are built from color sketches and photos gathered on location. That on-site time becomes bound to my studio painting experience. Subjects can be panoramic mountain landscape, coastal surf; or more intimate views of small cascades and deeply shadowed dunes. When a painting gives me the same deep-breath feeling as the inspiration, I know why I paint! to view some of my work!
