Karen Leigh

My work for many years has been done in transparent watercolor on paper with the occasional use of gouache for certain effects.  I am always seduced by the mystery of it, the delicate balance of freedom and control, the luminous washes and layers of color.  Facing that sheet of white paper and deciding what to do with it is a great risk but always worth taking.  As Goethe said, “Whatever you can do or dream, begin it.  Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”  Surprises await!

The subjects and materials I choose are traditional in nature and application.  These days I am primarily interested in urban landscapes and the figure but, as I said in my biographical statement, finding beauty in unexpected places (a junk yard for instance) offers many exciting possibilities as well.  As always, I hope the viewer will take away a new appreciation for the world around them after viewing the work.

As a teacher as well as a painter, I owe much to the many masters of the medium with whom I have studied over the years and am honored to pass on that knowledge to my students.  Becoming visually aware is, I think, the most important lesson of all.
